Project Focus: Herding Hill Farm

WCF asked for a translation of the site rules for their 5-star Caravan, Camping & Glamping site at Herding Hill Farm, https://www.herdinghillfarm.co.uk, into 3 European languages. Two of the translators involved in this project regularly go camping themselves – in the UK and abroad – which proved to be very useful experience for this project. The award winning amenities with underfloor heating and the sauna will be a joy to anybody coming back from a challenging walk along Hadrian's Wall. There are also some "facilities" at the site which required research on the web, and we discovered that there are very few certified International Dark Sky Parks on the continent, i.e. green spaces which are certified as sites which make efforts to conserve and protect the natural darkness of the sky. Herding Hill Farm is a designated International Dark Sky Site and offers spectacular stargazing!

Herding Hill Farm is only an hour’s drive from the DFDS Seaways terminal in North Shields which is connected to IJmuiden (Amsterdam) in the Netherlands and a convenient stopping point for visitors from mainland Europe on their way to the Lake District, the Scottish Highlands and Islands, or Ireland. There is much to warrant a longer stay at Herding Hill Farm, though: Only 1 mile away from the UNESCO World Heritage site Hadrian’s Wall and close to Vindolanda Roman Fort & Museum and Housesteads Roman Fort, there is much history close at hand to explore, on foot and/or using the AD 122 Hadrian's Wall Country Bus (the bus stop is next to the entrance of Herding Hill Farm).

Throughout 2022, a programme of events and activities which celebrates the 1900th anniversary of the beginning of the construction of Hadrian's Wall will commemorate 1900 years of history of the UNESCO World Heritage Site (WHS), recognised locally, nationally, and internationally, as a cultural and historical asset of Outstanding Universal Value to humanity.

After providing the translations for their Herding Hill Farm site, WCF asked us to translate the site rules for Drummohr Holiday Park in Musselburgh near Edinburgh into 5 European languages (https://www.drummohr.org/).

Roman writing tablet excavated at Vindolanda Roman Fort, and the earliest example of female writing in Latin: the personal invitation from Claudia Severa to Lepidina to attend Claudia Severa's birthday party, closing with a personal farewell from Severa.

The Sycamore Gap tree on Hadrian's Wall – between Steel Rigg and Housesteads Roman Fort – is one of the most photographed in the country, and close to Herding Hill Farm.
Jeff and Mafi from Akaroa, Aoteaora, enjoying the far-reaching views from Hadrian's Wall at Steel Rigg right aross to the Pennines. The translation of Aoteaora, the Maori-language name for New Zealand is "long white cloud". This refers to the cloud formations which helped Polynesian navigators find the country.
